IN FOCUS FOR DECEMBER 2009: Studio ia, Ballerat Victoria

Leading into Christmas seemed the perfect time to escape the madness of Melbourne for the day and take a trip to our friends in country Victoria; Olivia and Greg, owners of Studio i.a (inner active) situated on the outskirts of Ballerat. For those seeking this boutique gym experience for the first time, you will be greeted, as were we by a deceptively large and very quaint homestead style boutique gym that seemingly goes on forever.  Furnished in cozy yet contemporary interiors and colors to invigorate the senses, this former furniture show room facility has a comprehensive cardio area, stretching and free weights area, a leg room full of heavy duty weight machines and the space that impressed me most was the BOOTCAMP ROOM, yes for those wanting to do Bootcamp sessions at Studio i.a you will experience a session to rival most military facilities for obstacle style course tasks and challenges. Greg and Olivia really have thought of it all, the cherry on the top being the passion these two share for fitness, training and changing peoples lives. If their style of training doesn’t motivate you to change then their 2.5m Python certainly will…..

PRE BLAST with Olivia and Greg:

PR: How did you get involved in the fitness industry?

S-ia:  A few years back we were unhappy with our lifestyle and unhealthy habits so we decided to join a gym and do the Body for Life program together. The positive changes this made to our body & mind was unbelievable not to mention the effects it has had on our lives since then. Becoming fit & healthy has improved our quality of life so much more than we could have ever imagined. Once we made the positive changes in our lives we have never looked back, we fell in love with the weight training and became extremely passionate about it. We love helping others achieve what we did and change their life for the better through health and fitness and the correct mindset.

PR: What do you love/hate about the fitness scene in Melbourne/Australia?

S-ia : We can’t stand all the quick fix solutions and false advertising out there within the fitness industry. There is no such thing as a magic pill or drink, there is only one solution which has always been hard work and consistency with your training and nutrition that achieves great results, not some magic pill or shake.  We love the fact that our career keeps us fit and healthy. It is also extremely rewarding to be able to make such an impact to other people’s lives in many ways through health and fitness. We get to see people literally change in front of our eyes. Physically and mentally they grow into amazing human beings and achieve what that they never thought possible. This gives us great satisfaction in being able to change people’s lives for the better by doing something we love.

PR: How are you planning to impact the industry?

S-ia: We are planning to impact the industry by changing the way people think about gyms and getting fit and healthy. We provide our clients & members with a very comprehensive member’s only online fitness portal where they can access articles on nutrition, weight training, mindset and discussion boards. There is also an online journal where they can track their progress. In order to help others achieve you need to get inside their head and take the time to find out what has held them back from achieving a healthy lifestyle in the past. Once you can pin point and make them aware of what has been stopping them from becoming fit and healthy in the past they can improve their mindset and achieve the results they have always wanted.

PR: List your athletic achievements?

ANB 2009 Victorian Physique Championships – Olivia 3rd Figure Tall, Greg 2nd Novice Men’s 2008, 3rd Men’s under 80kg. Have also trained winning Sportsmodels.

It has been a great athletic achievement in itself for us to transform our bodies and lives in they way we have and actually step up on stage and compete in bodybuilding and figure competitions. We would have never imagined doing this in the past. Being fit and healthy that is, let alone owning our own successful gym.

PR: What is your current personal training and nutrition regimen?

S-ia :Current training/nutrition regime

  • Weight training 4 x times a week
  • 4 x Boot camp sessions a week
  • 1 x boxing class a week
  • 1 x hour walk with the little mutts’ everyday

We eat a balanced diet of protein, carbs and fats every 2-3 hours, approximately 6 meals a day.

PR: What is your training philosophy? What is your training philosophy for /with clients?

S-ia : Training Philosophy - To continue to push our training beyond our thinking. The only limits are the ones that our thoughts set for ourselves.

S-ia :Training Philosophy/clients – To encourage clients to push themselves beyond what they believe is their limit. Encourage them to have a goal to strive towards and once that goal is achieved reward themselves for the hard work and effort. No matter how hard it sometimes gets in achieving your goals never give up – persistence is the key to success!

PR: In what way do you believe the STUDIO IA experience is different from other environments?

S-ia : At Studio ia the training experience is different from other environments as we are set on 4.5 private acres of beautiful countryside. We limit the number of members so that we can focus our full attention on each member and give a more personalized service to help guide and assist them through their health & fitness journey. We work on their mental conditioning as much as their physical conditioning. Our advice is not only limited to training but to assist in correct nutrition and mindset. We are always holding free seminars on nutrition and mindset for our members.

All our members know each other by name and say they feel like they are part of the Studio ia family.

PR: When a guy or girl comes to train with you what can they expect?

S-ia :They can expect a very personalized & professional service. They can expect to learn a lot about themselves through their thoughts and feel great about what they have actually achieved in a training session. They will be pushed to limits they never thought would be possible

PR: Industry experience (quals, study etc)

The Blast Session

The session Olivia and Greg had planned for me was a great ‘shake-up’ for my legs and Abs.

The exercises we worked on were: Squats, 45 degree leg press, leg extension, floor ab work. The Tabata method would be a great session to incorporate into any program and is a  great way to let the nervous system settle down after a heavy weight training phase in any Periodized program, high rep with moderate weights stimulates alterative neural pathways and works different energy systems thus avoiding overuse and overload injuries and increased muscle endurance. Pocket Rocket would recommend 2 weeks of this style training every 6 week Periodized cycle.

·         High Intensity Interval Training Method – Tabata Method (www.tabataprotocol.com)

·         High volume training

·         Aim: To reduce body fat whilst building muscle.

The main consideration in the session was time under tension and time for rest, so all work and rest periods were timed with a stop watch. By the 3rd set you certainly felt the heart rate jump and the working muscles crying out for ‘more time’, it was great. The fact that we were training in the hottest part of a 35 degree day added to the gasping for oxygen experience, but that was all part of the fun. 8 x cycles of 20 second high intensity bursts of work  followed by 10 seconds of rest. Fat burning increases in the working muscle when there is a high lactic build up achieved.  Olivia explained that “the Tabata Method boosts your body’s ability to burn more body fat, and because it bolsters explosiveness it boosts the ability to gain more strength and muscle growth, since a greater overload on muscles will lead to an increase in size....burning more energy during workouts and promoting….recovery and growth post workout.”

Studio ia suggests this a good session and would most benefit:

·         Anyone with a good level of fitness who would like to burn fat, increase endurance and build muscle and power.

·         Olivia is currently using this method of training and getting great results. They also use it in their boot camp sessions.
